Raising Health at Work

Most Americans spend more waking hours at work than anywhere else. If we remake our workplaces to support healthy habits, we can lower health care costs, increase productivity and help our employees lead healthier, happier lives. Here’s how it’s working for a few of our partners.

Sodexo (Meatless Monday)

Healthy Long Island University Nurses

Healthy Monday works with leading national food service provider, Sodexo, to bring Meatless Monday to corporate and campus dining halls. In April of 2009, Sodexo launched Meatless Monday in six Bank of America, GE and Wyeth cafeterias to coincide with Earth Month. The program promoted awareness about the health and environmental benefits of reducing meat consumption.

The following October, all 17 WellPoint facilities requested that the Meatless Monday initiative be added to their existing “Choose Better Health” program. Meatless menus and related messaging are popular with customers and dining services alike, allowing both parties to make healthier, environmentally sustainable choices.

Jenny Craig- Another Manic Monday

In January 2007 Healthy Monday became the centerpiece for a Jenny Craig-sponsored satellite media tour with Dr. Ian Lapp of Columbia University. In May 2008 Healthy Monday reappeared in a television advertising campaign featuring Valerie Bertinelli.

The campaign urged Americans to use Monday to get back on track with their weight loss goals by calling Jenny. It was reinforced by an internal worksite wellness initiative that included eNewsletters and intranet tips.

The Director of Corporate Communications, reported, “This new initiative is certainly a positive effective way for public health to converge with commerce, and we are glad to be a part of it.”
